(This article begins a deeper dive into digital nomad travel insurance. I’ll be sharing thoughts during my month’s travels through Nepal, while covered by upstart Safety Wing insurance for the trip’s duration (and beyond?) Stay tuned for further updates from beautiful Nepal!)

(Update – We’ve built a new hub dedicated to nomad travel insurance for remote workers. We’re aiming this to uncover options and recommendations on insurance for freelancers and travelers.)

Travel insurance is often an expensive afterthought for many travellers. Contrary to other useful travel aids and necessities, insurance is invisible, not fun, and not cool! What’s the joy in paying for something invisible, that isn’t exciting, even if it’s actually needed? Helicopter rescue aside.

For most of my trips since my annual (and endless) travel life commenced in 2014, I was covered by World Nomads. They helped me with emergency dental treatment when a tooth broke on a Cape Town biscuit back in 2015. World Nomads disappointed me during the Sri Lanka bombings in 2019. There was a complete lack of emergency coordination during the country’s federal communications embargo. Our policies were expiring that very week, but they wouldn’t allow a third party to extend them on our behalf – even though we couldn’t contact anybody. I had one or two flight cancellation disasters, but managed to solve them on my own.

I’m not partial to World Nomads in any way, other than I’ve used them, and they came through once when badly needed. Their interface and search are intuitive, and they’re a respected brand. Yet, there aren’t many alternatives in the field of digital nomad travel insurance.

In recent years, SafetyWing have entered the fold. I’ve been tracking them since their inception, and they invited me on several occasions to participate as an Ambassador. However, I’m loathe to endorse anything that I haven’t used myself, and wanted to try them out.

World Nomads Nomadic Travel Insurance Prices Have Skyrocketed

I’m presently on my first global trip since early 2020, when I departed Poland before two years of lockdown in Goa. For the first calendar year, I simply extended the original coverage at a reasonable rate, up to 365 days. The convenience was that I could extend the validity a few months at a time, at whatever rates I could comfortably afford.

Researching digital nomad travel insurance this time around, World Nomads prices had skyrocketed. Quotes for simply Nepal and India were 2-3x the previous amount I paid over past years. 3 months of World Nomads coverage for merely Nepal and India, became over $1000. Last year, it was in the hundreds of dollars. World Nomads customer service responded about “general price fluctuations”, but stated that no such extreme price changes were observed on their end.

Time to try Safety Wing?

Unreasonably expensive. Simple 3-month quote for World Nomads digital nomads travel insurance… through Nepal alone

Safety Wing Digital Nomad Travel Insurance

Safety Wing offers a handy instance travel subscription model, that has finally become competitive against World Nomads in the long run.

World Nomads replied to my concerns, stating that they hadn’t noticed major reasons for fees dramatically increasing, but this new price is 50% higher than when I originally wrote.

Consequently, 3 months of Safety Wing Nomads Insurance is under $200 (for 40+), and around $120 if you’re under 40 years old. Where the prices used to favour World Nomads over a 12-month period, there is now no comparison – comparably, the quote is over $2000 on World Nomads. Furthermore, Safety Wing includes all countries (except the USA), while my World Nomads comparison quote was simply for Nepal and India.

Attractive colours, design and branding from Safety Wing, with an intuitive interface

One Safety Wing downside: 28-day billing

After the first month of my Safety Wing subscription, I was surprised to be billed “early” for the next month. In fact, as the fee calculation is upon every 28 days, it’s less than a month. This means there are 13 payments in one calendar year, so explore your own price research accordingly. In my instance, it’s still miles cheaper than World Nomads.

One Month of Safety Wing: Initial Thoughts

Up to the hours before flying back to Goa, I experienced no detrimental accidents or mishaps. The low point was trying to break up a brutal group fight on the full moon / Buddha’s birthday. But both sides of the fight respectfully avoided me, acknowledging my efforts to calm things down. The other consideration is that medical treatment in India and/or Nepal is very inexpensive. I will consider this a little further when I return to India: Will I extend the coverage, or wait to renew until my next global travels?

So far, so good for Safety Wing.

Update – This article was first published in 2018, and the original information is predictably out of date. However, we’ve been based in Arambol since 2020, and – with our intimate understanding of the area – are updating this article for more recent, relevant information.

Goa, on the West coast of India, is one of the most special places on the planet. A visit all worldly, youthful travellers should make at least once in their lifetimes.

It feels like a rite of passage. Younger travelers, festival goers and artists stop through one of the many, diverse beach communities of Goa to expand their spirituality and consciousness. Older visitors enjoy the smooth, clean sand, warm ocean and beautiful views. Couples deepen bonds.

Many people come and decide to stay forever. At least, for as long as they can, and during season. Old hippies. Yoga in abundance.

As a former Portuguese colony, the buildings feature a distinctly bright and coastal flair. There is a huge Russian influence, evident in the populace and signage, while barely any Americans.

People come for the nightlife, parties and festivals, in excellent climate, satisfying food, all highly affordable.

With all these attributes, it’s no surprise that there are many digital nomads that come to Goa, and land in Arambol specifically.

But is it an ideal place to accomplish work, and work remotely?

Why Arambol Beach?

As discussed in my upcoming book, Plan Sea, dreaming and research are essential steps of affluent travel preparation. Do your homework for the best possible experience based on your wants and needs.

Goa is not simply an area – it’s a full, albeit small, state in Western India. There are many beaches and communities from which to pick. It takes a very long time to travel between places.

South Goa is vastly different than North Goa. South Goa is far quieter and less about parties. Anjuna and Vagator beaches in the south part of North Goa are for more hardcore festival goers, while Arambol Beach towards the northern part of North Goa, is more bohemian and artistic. I chose the latter.

I met countless other writers in Arambol. The level of intellectual thought and consciousness here is refreshing. The journeys from and to, with Goa a well-designed stop in the middle, have brought all of us together in this little, mutual portal of time.

If you enjoy exploring, you can walk north along the coast, and reach a more secluded Paliem Beach. It’s next to a stunning lake and trees area called Sweet Lake. There is an epic banyan tree where you’ll meet pseudo-traditional babas, blessing you and asking for money and alcohol. Sometimes they have snakes!

There is a small mountain to climb, and if you’re game, you could probably pitch your tent somewhere.

Travellers and Digital Nomads in Arambol

Arambol is the first place I have encountered so many similar travelers with unique, often complex, travel histories and multiple nationalities.

Adventurers on so many different variations of voyages, short, long and longer.

Though, perhaps, a minority compared to the overall tourist numbers, I noticed many other digital nomads in Arambol. Usually, mid to late afternoon, with scenic views of the beaches and ocean, hurriedly typing away on laptops.

The realities are that daily power cuts, Internet irregularities and regular distractions add challenges to a productive digital nomadic lifestyle. Wifi is inconsistent. 3G/4G mobile reception is not the best, often resulting in no signal. You’ll need to be patient and have some sort of back up plan. Having a book I could write offline helped keep my productivity high when inspired.

2024 update – Wifi has truly matured in Arambol, and is more consistent with reliable, low cost connections. The 4G mobile network is also steady, as a backup or supplementary wifi source.

Best Wifi Cafes in Arambol

While most guesthouses and restaurants offer some level of wifi, connection speeds are not the best. Fortunately, there are a few spots I found that allowed me to work productively enough.

Jungle Dance – Nestled up quiet Temple Road in Arambol, Jungle Dance is an enviable mini eco-village. It has an affordable restaurant, multiple seating areas, reliable wifi, and a friendly, relaxed vibe, that attracts artists and yoga practioners. Jungle Dance is one of the true gems, not only of Arambol, but throughout all of Goa. Note the same owner once ran the popular, central Double Dutch, but now both brands are managed under the sole Jungle Dance location. A personal favourite! Jungle Dance on Instagram.

Affogato – Not far from Arambol Junction, Affo is a quality, clean cafe, albeit a little on the pricier side. It’s unique menu includes homemade ice cream and decadent coffee options, including its name sake, affogato (espresso and ice cream). In what is possibly the most amazing taste of anything in Goa, try the phenomenal Green Gram (vegan oil option also available). Affo on Instagram

Lush Bistro / Garden – Now situated near Mandrem market (relocated since its former location at Arambol Beach), Lush offers a deluxe menu and a comfortable, quiet working environment. Say hello to the friendly, Messy the Dog! Lush Bistro on Instagram

This is It – On the north part of the beach, This Is It is well situated view ocean views and a social hub due to foot traffic. They offer tantalising dosas from R40, and a sensational ice coffee with chocolate called a Tropical Iceberg. Wifi is satisfactory. I spent many a day losing myself for hours at This is It, sometimes productive, often social. This Is It – is particularly respected for its nightly live music and appreciation of the arts. This Is It on Instagram

Leroy’s Garden of Dreams – Located on a hill behind Arambol Junction, beyond the petrol station, the recently relocated Garden of Dreams offers a quality, if not overpriced, menu, and frequent live music. There are plentiful sitting areas and reliable wifi – suitable to spend hours working as necessary. (Note – not to be confused with the other Garden of Dreams at the original, central location). Garden of Dreams on Instagram

Black Pearl – Popular cafe with decent coffee. They seemed to suffer more from power cuts than any other place, resulting in diminished wifi. I was unable to work from here between lack of power/wifi, and the small space that was usually full of people sipping coffee. Also a caution to females, for its sometimes chauvinistic attitude.

Bees Knees – A restaurant in a chilled setting on the main strip, Bees Knees features various breakfast specials for around R190. I ate and worked from here three times, enjoying the serenity (and the wifi that usually worked!)

Places to Stay near Arambol Beach

There is no shortage of places to stay in Arambol, suited to your budget and style. If Arambol itself is too busy for you, try more south at beautiful and quieter Mandram and Morjim beaches.

Insider tip – Find a short term place, and move a little further away from the beach. One can find apartments and houses in the Rs15,000-30,000 range (1 bedroom-3 bedroom houses). With Arambol becoming more crowded and prices rising, consider an adjacent area like Corgao, or up Temple Road or Pernem Roads.

(note – the original places mentioned in the article have changed, so they have been removed from here.)

I was keen to set up my tent, but between a brief illness and impromptu social plans, it didn’t happen on this trip. Also, guesthouses are so affordable at a few dollars per night, that most people don’t think about camping.

Search for accommodation in Arambol here….

Cash and Currency

While one of the many challenges of Goa life was the lack of convenient access to money, ATMs have become readily more accessible and reliable over the past few years.

Most places do not take bank cards, relying instead on cash. This means you have to venture out of Arambol town, to one of the three ATMs in the main village. It’s a twenty minute walk at a good pace.

The first ATM usually has a long line waiting to withdraw money. Your bank card might not necessarily work. The machine often runs out of money.

A tip is that there is a second ATM a few more minutes up the road most people are too lazy to walk to – or don’t know about. If this first ATM has a line, out of cash, or has problems with your bank card, continue walking the same direction away from Arambol, and there is a small ATM on the right.

One of my temporary acquaintances shared similar problems withdrawing money, though the second ATM worked for me. I think a temporary bank block was placed on her card, preventing her from trying again.

I shared with her one of my travel tips – using your foreign currency at a money exchange shop. This tip helped her greatly, and she was able to exchange thousands of Russian rubles for Indian rupees (virtually the same exchange rate).

Other tips in my book include traveling with a second or third backup bank card, designed for travel. Not just in case your main card doesn’t work, but if it’s stolen, as mine was in Cambodia. Keep a little cash on it, and stored separately from your main wallet or bank card.

There is no cryptocurrency possibility yet in Arambol or Goa, no Bitcoin ATM, or any place that currently accepts it.

Transportation around Arambol and Goa

Taxi cartels run Goa, making life difficult and expensive for you to get around, challenging enough to begin with.

There is no Uber, Grab or Ola, though ride sharing appears to be on the way. Getting between main parts of Goa is extremely expensive, so pick your home base location wisely.

Use a ride sharing board or group if you can. Putting a post out on Facebook found me one person to share a taxi to the airport. Personal networking and luck found me another – dropping the usual price to the airport of R1800 down to a more palatable R600 for each of us.

If you prefer the mobility of scooters and motorcycles, these are the transportation methods of choice in Goa. Scooters run from around R300 per day (really around 12 hours for an early morning drop off), so it’s best to rent multiple days, where prices can drop to R150-200 range, and you get to return it at the end of the final day. Note that in peak season time (December through March), scooters are in higher demand, and prices can skyrocket from Rs500-1000 per day, or Rs6000-10000 per month. Do shop around if you receive a price that is on the higher side.

Be very careful driving, and even walking, around Arambol and Goa. There are many drunk, stoned and distracted people driving around. This results in many accidents and injuries. Police will stop you on the main roads between the different parts of the state (e.g. between Arambol and Vagator), and fine you if your passenger isn’t wearing a helmet.

You can take public buses to/from the airport or train station, head to the capital, Panaji. From there you’ll be able to piece together 1-2 buses to reach your chosen destination. R30-50 per bus.

Nightlife

This could be a whole separate article or even blog. Goa is renowned for its nightlife. It is the epicentre of the original psychedelic trance scene that starting shaking the world decades ago.

There is no shortage of live events in Arambol, although the scene has fallen a little due to police interference. There are numerous live music venues, smaller live performances at numerous guesthouses and cafes, and the occasional beach party. Trip Foundation, Twice in Nature and This Is It are three examples. Back in 2018, we found a techno party on the beach outside Cafe Food Planet, but that part of the beach has since been pretty much cleared away.

Here in 2024, life is changing in Goa. There is a new police chief, a shiny new airport up the road in Mopa, and a desire from Goa Tourism to attract “different” tourists. This means people with money, and not backpackers, hippies and starving artists. It’s a lot like gentrification of cities, but there is still some soul and life around.

As mentioned earlier, if you’re all about the big psy-trance parties, head to Vagator and Anjuna. For Arambol, there is a little more emphasis on live music, poetry and spoken word, chilled out beats and a nightly drum circle outside Love Temple.

Whatever your entertainment tastes, Goa has it somewhere. Arambol features more than enough variety and choice to immerse yourself there for a few weeks without leaving.

Note that “season” is from the later part of the year, through to early March. After that, the parties and crowds dry up. This may be to your liking if you want more peace and quiet!

Thoughts on Arambol Goa for Digital Nomads

My two weeks in Arambol became one of the most peaceful, uplifting and enjoyable times of my life. This commenced an unexpected spiritual journey, through connections I made, and seemed to be destined to make.

The work perspective depends on your personal level of discipline. There are distractions everywhere. The weather and vibe is incredibly sleepy and serene, and if you smoke green, it’s regularly accessible.

For remote workers in Arambol, if you can take care of your duties earlier in the day, accept that you may not always be optimally productive, and balance enjoying life and accomplishing work, you’ll thrive.

Is Arambol Goa ideal for digital nomads? Arambol ticks all the digital nomad boxes: weather, food, chilled vibe, close to beaches, cool crowd, things to do. Wifi connectivity has improved.

Goa life is an adventure and reiterates what life is all about: Living. Balance that work/chill lifestyle, and enjoy every moment while growing as a human.

Koh Phangan is a phenomenal option in Thailand for digital nomads. Nestled in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Phangan isn’t just a haven for full moon parties. It’s also becoming a sought-after destination for digital nomads seeking a perfect blend of work and play. With its pristine beaches, vibrant culture and a growing community of nomads, Koh Phangan offers a unique experience for those looking to combine work with tropical island living.

We visited a few months back, and are looking forward to returning in Spring. The digital nomad lifestyle in Koh Phangan is top notch, and one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Note: We have recently visited Koh Phangan / Haad Rin again – and are compiling a much more comprehensive article!

Digital Nomad-Friendly Workspaces and Cafes

Koh Phangan boasts an increasing number of co-working spaces catering to the needs of digital nomads. Spaces like KohSpace, Hustle Space and Secret Place offer high-speed internet, comfortable workstations, and networking opportunities. For a more laid-back atmosphere, explore the island’s numerous beachfront cafes, such as Bambu Huts, where you can sip on a coconut while working amidst the sound of waves.

Cost of Living and Budgeting Tips

The cost of living in Koh Phangan is relatively affordable, with reasonably priced accommodation options, local markets offering fresh produce, and budget-friendly street food. It’s completely reasonable to save cash, and enjoy the beauty of the island without straining your wallet.

Be mindful that many of the places log the expenses of guests across their stay, including food and drink, payable at check out. While this makes for convenience, it can result in a surprise bill at the end of the stay!

Local Culture and Experiences

Beyond the majestic beaches and digital realm, Koh Phangan offers a rich cultural experience. Explore the island’s temples, participate in traditional Thai cooking classes, or immerse yourself in the vibrant local markets. Don’t miss the opportunity to join the island’s famous Full Moon Party or discover the tranquility of secluded beaches, providing the perfect balance between work and exploration.

Our personal favourite, Bambu Huts, is beside a weekly Saturday late-night hotspot, but Bambu also hosts the island’s big Sunday daytime party. Keep this in mind for your work: weekdays will typically be perfectly quiet, and weekends become more hectic.

Connectivity and Internet Reliability

Koh Phangan has made significant strides in improving its internet infrastructure. Most accommodation and co-working spaces provide reliable high-speed internet, ensuring you can stay connected while enjoying the island’s beauty. Cell/mobile coverage is satisfactory as a supplementary, or backup, Internet connection.

Digital Nomads Accommodation

From beachfront bungalows to modern apartments, Koh Phangan offers a range of accommodation choices suitable for digital nomads. Consider staying in digital nomad-friendly spaces like our highly-recommended Bambu Huts ($10-15 per night). You can visit somewhere like All At Sea Beach Resort for a more luxurious experience ($30-40 per night). If you prefer hostels, there is a wide selection of Koh Phangan hostels from around $5 per night. You can find other available accommodation in Koh Phangan, here…

As Koh Phangan is a lifestyle destination, nomads need to be mindful that many other guests visit strictly for recreational purposes. If you prefer peace and quiet, scout a place (or a room) further away from any party centres.

View from atop Bambu Huts, Koh Phangan

Digital Nomad Co-Working Spaces on Koh Phangan

There are numerous co-working spaces on Koh Phangan, and the list seems to change frequently. Here’s a few Koh Phangan co-working spaces to check out:

Remote & Digital – Foreigner-focused, Remote&Digital seeks to offer a modern remote work experience

Inner Space is a cosy and charming coworking place near Srithanu, Koh Phangan island

Beachub – Nestled on the beautiful island of Koh Phangan, Beachub offers a laid-back co-working environment with stunning beach views, high-speed internet, and a community of like-minded individuals.

Hustle Club offers a variety of desks, private office space, a conference room, a coffee shop, restaurant, bar area and a pool

Digital Nomad Visa and Legal Considerations

Navigating visa requirements is a crucial aspect for digital nomads. Fortunately, Thailand offers various visa options, including the popular Tourist Visa and Education Visa. Many foreign passports can receive a 30-day tourist visa upon arrival in Thailand. A digital nomad visa in Thailand is available, that offers a 10 year stay for 50,000 Baht, but successful (well-heeled) individuals must have proved substantial income (>USD80,000 per year) and be part of a rich organisation.

Check The Passport Index to gain a clearer idea of visas for your passport.

Networking Opportunities and Community Events

Koh Phangan’s digital nomad community continues to grow, offering ample opportunities for networking and collaboration. Attend weekly meetups, join co-working events, or participate in skill-sharing sessions to connect with fellow remote workers. There is a diverse assortment of visitors to the Thai island, including artists, musicians, DJs, music lovers, meditators and party people. But, also experienced remote work travelers looking to take a break from city life.

In conclusion, Koh Phangan is more than just a tourist destination; it’s a digital nomad’s paradise. Koh Phangan beckons those seeking a unique and fulfilling work-life balance in a tropical setting. Whether you’re looking for a serene work environment or exciting adventures, this island gem has it all for the modern-day nomad.

Aspiring, or seasoned, digital nomad? Here is an updated list of the top digital nomad destinations we recommend you consider for your future travels. These are places with a vibe, affordable for most remote workers / travelers, and there’s something special about them.

If this is your first time here at DigitalNomad.blog, I’m Sea. I’ve been a freelancer for over 20 years, and I’ve worked remotely for over a decade. Since 2014, I’ve worked from 6 of 7 continents, and I’ve more recently settled in Goa, India. A few years ago I published my second book, Plan Sea – that touches on some of these top digital nomad destinations. This blog is starting to pick up steam, again.

Click on the links below to discover some recommended places to visit for digital nomads. I’ve personally found that each of them are possible to live at a high standard, for less than a couple hundred dollars per week. Many of these top destinations are situated in warm climates of affordable countries.

Jeju Island, South Korea

Arambol, North Goa, India

Agonda / Patnem, South Goa, India

Pokhara, Nepal

Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka

Koh Phangan, Thailand

Kampot, Cambodia

Auroville, India

Seoul, South Korea

Nomadic Recommendation: Jeju Island, South Korea

Jeju Island is a magical place, tropical and volcanic, situated off the south coast of the Korean peninsula. With a bevy of wondrous sights and attractions, it’s common for touristic hot spots to overflow with foreign visitors. Still

Jeju is much like it’s land sibling, in the endless coffee shop brands, truly convenient 24/7 shops and efficient transportation. While much of South Korea is mountainous, Jeju’s highest peak is the Hallasan volcano, at 1950m tall. Mt. Halla is also the highest mountain in South Korea.

Encircling the island is an infinite panorama of pristine beaches. Efficient highway transportation whisks between the north’s Jeju City, and the south’s Seogwipo. Top restaurants, hotels, cafes and music bars can be found all over.

The wifi is excellent, and widely available nearly everywhere. Cafes feature unbelievable sweeping views of shimmering blue ocean and golden sand.

For nomads on a budget, save the cost of staying by bringing a tent. Camping is encouraged across much of South Korea – and on Jeju Island. On my previous visit, I camped most nights, tucked away in tropical jungle, often near the sea.

It’s one of the most magical places I’ve ever imagined, and home to the best weeks of my life.

You can read the original Jeju digital nomad article here..

Local Tips: Arambol, Goa, India

Goa has been my base for around four years, after previously living in Poland for two. I made my annual visit in early 2020, becoming stuck in beautiful Agonda, in South Goa across that turbulent monsoon / world crisis. An invitation paved the way for me to return to Arambol, that soon became my latest adopted home. Hence, my Arambol perspective comes from knowing its places, the people pushing the arts & culture here, and hints of Arambol’s future makeover, intimately.

Things are definitely radically changing, as part of a long-term tourism and infrastructure plan. Casinos that plague the state’s under-inspiring capital, Panaji, are to be moved up Morjim and Mandrem way (beside Arambol). The recent opening of nearby Manohar International Airport (Mopa / GOX) is bringing new swathes of domestic tourists to Arambol, its most proximate beach. The beach itself is being cleared of its vibey shacks and restaurants, with police more rigorously enforcing 10pm curfews.

The beaches are often overcrowded by sunset, and occasionally raucous, such as during December’s wearying peak season. This has led many to uncover the more tranquil joys of Temple Road and Pernem Road, towards Corgao. February through early April is a wonderful time, still busy but relaxing with more of a creative vibe.

Remote Work in Peace: South Goa, India

If you enjoy the chill Goa vibes, but prefer a little more peace and quiet, South Goa might be the nomadic stop for you. While its reputation is a little “more expensive” than North Goa, if you’re able to find reasonable accommodation, we noticed minimal difference in cost of living. There are better restaurants and cafes, that might contribute to this perception.

To be clear, “South Goa” comprises the region south of Goa’s capital, Panaji / Panjim. In particular, I’m a huge advocate of the lush Canacona area, that includes incredible Agonda and Patnem, that sandwich the better-known/too-busy Palolem Beach. Hence, my recommendation is to visit Agonda and/or Patnem.

Restaurants of note include The Mill (Palolem), Zest (Agonda and Palolem locations). Agonda – Sunset Point. Patnem has more of a music vibe, although live music can be found on Agonda. While it’s considered a little more expensive, one can certainly find local-targeted, cheap eats.

Stay tuned for the full Agonda/Patnem digital nomads article! We are rolling out fresh content weekly moving forward.

Pokhara Lakeside might be my favourite place of all, in terms of excellent cafes, decent Internet and an uber-chill vibe. Vegan Way. Picturesque views at The Juicery. Restaurants, music venues.

Touristic attractions include the Japanese cable car leading up to the hilltop of Sarangkot. This offers breathtaking sunrise views of the Annapurna mountain range of the Himalayas.

For those requiring even more peace and quiet, visit nearby tranquil Begnas Lake (<>30 minute drive from Pokhara). Plentiful guesthouses offer sufficient wifi and mobile coverage. Recommended cafe/restaurant: Classic Chill.

Top Digital Nomad Destinations in South Korea

As a bonus on this list, we look at digital nomads in South Korea. While our last visit was back in 2017, we found how one can live and remote work affordably, on a low budget! This is despite Seoul being one of the world’s most expensive cities. (Tip: University areas have access to cheap meal deals and accommodation!)

You might rightfully point out that all the other top digital nomad destinations are generally smaller and in tropical climates. Did you know that South Korea has a lot of tropical beaches? Even beyond Jeju Island, the south of the nation – around the large oceanside city of Busan – features numerous incredible, tropical areas worth visiting in South Korea.

Some are simply makeshift: enough space for a laptop, near a power outlet. Certain spots are definitely more distracting than others! (see: beaches, Rio de Janeiro, most hostels, etc)

I fulfill a lot of different duties in my “work” life. After my “dayjob” blockchain/IT work, (ideal for cafes & libraries), I lock into music & arts production mode, hence the regular accompaniment of a portable music studio. This work is much more focused from a private room.

I’ve worked at, and have produced, plentiful music festivals & events across the world; accommodation is usually a tent, and my “office” is whatever station I’m assigned to. Our Arambol-based experimental music & arts TV show / live series, @goamusiclab, consumes most of my spare creative time, working from “The Lab”.

All these different roles have contributed to a broader and diverse skill base, that greatly comes in handy when any new challenge is thrown my way. It keeps things fresh and interesting. And I gain a better sense of what I really like (or don’t), as well as for which work & tasks I legitimately hold passion.

Some places are riskier than others – like scaling Himalayan mountains, or crossing treacherous areas for a sliver of peace. All the more reason to have remote travel insurance – I recommend SafetyWing (@safetywing) for their Nomad Insurance options here…

Where next to work from? Goa has been fantastic, but perhaps next year will bring a return to Europe and/or Africa and/or the Americas. Only so long we can hold a nomad down.

Fitness can become an important part of daily work-travel routines

Technology has made it possible to build a career and see the world at the same time. For a lot of men, life is fuller because of the capacity to sustain travelling as a digital nomad. However, this on-the-go lifestyle could be contradictory to another goal that’s becoming increasingly popular today — fitness. WW International reports that improving health and well-being is attracting global interest, as 78% of people surveyed across the globe report their desire to get healthier. The top health and wellness goals for consumers were exercising or getting stronger and losing weight.

For digital nomads who rarely find themselves at a permanent home base, these goals aren’t always easy to achieve. However, pursuing your travel goals shouldn’t compromise your fitness. Here’s how you can make it work.

Have a diet fit for the road

A balanced diet plays a big role in fitness and maintaining a healthy weight. However, failing to monitor your intake while travelling can lead to weight gain. WeightWatchers believes that weight loss for men is only possible when you form healthy eating habits. That’s why the diet you choose to follow on your travels shouldn’t restrict what you eat. To cultivate sustainable habits that aren’t stressful to maintain, you should instead plan a diet that you will enjoy.

Indulge in the local cuisine, but avoid processed foods. Balance this with home-made meals so you can eat a wide range of nutrients. Have a list of ingredients and recipes that are healthy, enjoyable, and easy to find. You could also keep portable kitchen equipment, such as a blender, if you prefer having smoothies for a convenient meal. This way, even when constantly on the move, you don’t always have to resort to eating out.

Be mindful of what you put into your body, and how often

Create a portable workout plan

The benefits of exercise can never be overstated. Not only does it regulate your blood pressure and cholesterol, but WebMD states that exercise benefits your mood, heightens your energy and productivity, and lowers your stress. For the digital nomad moving from one place to another, these perks can help you power through each workday.

To reap these benefits, customize your workout plan to be conducive to travel. Bring convenient equipment like jump ropes or resistance bands for both cardio and strength training. You can also practice yoga, which can be done anywhere you have space. You can even burn some extra calories by sneaking physical activity into your travel plans. For instance, you could forego short bus trips and walk instead.

Prioritize sleep

A common mistake men make in their fitness journey is foregoing proper sleep. The AASM reports that men view sleepiness as an affirmation of their hard work and thus get used to being tired. This may be even more likely to happen to digital nomads who want to make the most of both their travels and their careers. However, our article ‘Work-Travel Life – Improving Discipline on the Road’ explains that being a digital nomad requires balance. This balance is crucial to maintaining momentum at work.

By building sleep into your fitness plans and travel schedules, you ensure that you’re getting the energy boost you need to be in top shape. Make sure you get the recommended 6 to 8 hours of sleep a night. This will help you stay sharp and regulate your metabolism. Outside work, adequate sleep will also fuel you with enough energy to keep your workouts going. Even if you constantly find yourself in a new place, implement evening routines that will put your mind in rest mode. You’re sure to see a significant payoff.

Being a digital nomad is challenging, but ultimately rewarding. By knowing how to stay fit, you can sustain this lifestyle for years to come.

On Wednesday December 23, the Plan Sea book was released to the world. The occasion was commemorated at a live launch event in Arambol, Goa, India, from sunset through the night.

Plan Sea is available now on planseabook.com, through India on pothi.com, and internationally on all the major booksellers from January 14, 2021. Here are some thoughts from the author to celebrate this day.

A Message from Plan Sea author S.E. Ansley

I’d like to warmly thank everybody for being a part of the Plan Sea journey, whether this is the first time you’ve heard about it, or you’ve participated during the story.

Writing a book is an epic undertaking, one that any aspiring writer, creative, communicator or deep thinker should consider in their lifetimes. There is an intimacy between words on screen and paper, with oneself; a means of harnessing various parts and powers of our minds. Writing is a medley of deep introversion, where we are alone with ourselves and our thoughts. Yet we must still find a means to communicate, whether it’s by labouring over a properly-worded sentence to scribble on a page, or to articulate more complex ideas and emotions with the intention of nudging a reader along a path.

Writers inherently must be able to cope and thrive in silence and solitude, for anything less can be impossible to progress any substantial work. Distractions come in the form of the usual suspects – online notifications, social impulses, relationship needs, and third party demands – while also inner conflict, where we think too much, or too hard. Let alone the typical gamut of human complexities, self-doubt and mustering motivation. Sometimes we can be grumpy to others around: Let us think and work in peace! It’s nothing personal.

For Plan Sea, the entirety of the book was crafted on the road, while travelling. For over three years I had to summon the daily drive and motivation to chip away, even if it was scribbling down happenings or thoughts, or sitting for hours in the wake of inspiration or aftershock to best capture recent events. Other than bursts of domestic stability, such as living in Poland in between road trips or global excursions, my homes were always short and temporary. I travelled to twenty-five countries in three years, and probably slept on a hundred different beds. Somehow I mustered the discipline to wake up each morning, dedicate the early hours of my brain to writing, and continue crafting the Plan Sea narrative.

Camping in Eastern Poland (chapter: The Baltic Trip, Part I)

Plan Sea: The Never-ending Story

The story never seemed like it might end. Even after the travel tips guidebook was scrapped in favour of focusing on the more magical narrative unfolding, there were numerous possible finales intended over the middle of 2018. There was the sensible closing of circles at the Borderland Burning Man festival in Denmark, while there was the exciting, romantic mystery of what might happen after David August’s performance at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie: Where next? However, magic (and Magia) unrelentingly unfolded, and I continued to depict events from my life into the story. This meant I kept writing, even when close to major world events like the bombings in Sri Lanka in April 2019, and through lockdown in the second quarter of this crazy 2020. Lockdown seemed a logical ending, not just for the weight of the global crisis and the universal uncertainty, but because this book had lasted long enough.

I spent most of 2020 editing Plan Sea. From February I released weekly chapters in eBook form to a sizeable email audience. In retrospect, these chapters were more like final drafts, riddled with errors, incessant waffling and traces of hurt feelings that I hadn’t been able to release through my physical, mortal life. Lockdown afforded me the opportunity for months of sustained dedication and progress, raising my editing and reviewing to higher levels. Even then, there were several further layers of self-editing, with help from professional friends and hobbyist colleagues. I continued to learn, and apply the lessons to my scrupulous, daily editing of Plan Sea.

In the end, I’m aware Plan Sea is not perfect: much like me and my existence. There are minor grammatical mistakes, occasional misplaced apostrophes, questionable comma usage (intended for pauses during longer sentences), and some typos. I think this is more truly the raw essence of myself and my journey. So often, as humans in today’s fractured modern world, we strive for the impossibility of perfection, the endless revision and cleaning-up of such removes blemishes but also slivers of the soul and spirit of original works. It’s like how modern music has become so digitally precise and robotic, with vocals perfectly pitch shifted, yet it doesn’t feel natural or truly human. I hope we can revert more to raw, real, analog and acoustic methods of artistry, remembering that computers are a tool to help us, and not to be programmed to replace the human spirit.

Khir Ganga in the Himalayas – a natural hot spa reward for hours of slippery trekking

Enjoy the Journey of Life

Plan Sea is a journey that I lived through a million times. Beyond adapting to physical events, I’ve had to note everything, write, re-write, re-read and edit many dozens of times, betraying my characteristic living in the moment. It’s time for me to return to my actual life, unencumbered by replaying the past, over and over. I’m not sure I’ll write a book like this again, but I couldn’t be happier with the result. To me, seeing and feeling the book in physical form, the project is now a success. Everything else is the (vegan) icing or organic cherry on the dessert. As you’ll learn about me, I’m about the journey, and am not much motivated by material means, other than upon the need to survive.

I hope you enjoy Plan Sea. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you might have, whether it’s about the book, or perhaps a tweak you hope to enact in your own life. For the writers and creatives: consider a writing odyssey of your own. There is no other introspective journey quite like it. Enjoy your adventures, and every day along the way.

Thanks for being a part of Plan Sea. Best wishes ahead in 2021 and beyond.

S.E.Ansley

We’ve previewed Plan Sea over the past few years while it was being written – and seen it evolve from a simple handbook of useful travel tips, into an epic odyssey!

The story is narrated across 3+ years of travel adventures and visits 25 countries, including 5 separate visits to India. From falling off a speeding train, a death-defying trek through the Himalayas, Sri Lanka during the bombings, Auroville’s 50th anniversary, 3 Vipassana meditations, 2 Burning Man events and countless concerts and festivals, Plan Sea is an outer adventure as much as a deep exploration into the self.

Plan Sea AudioBook coming in 2021

For those who were looking forward to the travel tips component of Plan Sea (the original impetus of the book), this substantial chunk of writing will become a separate eBook. This booklet should be available by the second quarter of 2021.

For audiobook fans, you’ll be pleased to know that the Plan Sea audiobook begins recording in the month ahead. There will be a semi-weekly podcast with chapter episodes across the first three months of 2021. At the conclusion of the podcast series, the chapters will be bundled up into a deluxe audiobook, complete with photographic memories.

Beyond Plan Sea, Sea’s creative focus begins switching to several long-term musical projects. The first is preparing a simple, compact live show for local and global performances. Simultaneous to this is beginning to record an album, while sampling local musicians and field sounds. The album and a bigger performance accompanied by an orchestra, are on top by the end of 2021. There may also be the debut of the Sun Moon Sea peace orchestra over the course of the year.

If you have any questions related to the book, it’s story, the author, global distribution or interview opportunities, please contact press@gashe.com. We hope you enjoy the Plan Sea adventure as much as we’ve enjoyed living it!

As a longtime digital nomad / remote freelancer I’ve constantly attended to improving work discipline on the road while travelling. It’s definitely challenging to balance a comfortable home routine in a city we know, then jump into non-stop travel where everything is new and a distraction.

Over the years I’ve diligently tweaked and improved my work discipline, countering distractions and crafting daily and weekly momentum. I’ve nurtured a format and schedule that works for me on weekdays, while leaving my weekends open, free and creative. This has allowed me to efficiently work from beaches on tropical islands, through dozens of countries and while in transit.

What might work for me won’t work for everybody, but perhaps this article will help inspire to make some necessary tweaks of your own.

Sometimes What We Think is Ideal… is Counter-intuitive

For many of my 12 years in Melbourne, Australia, I thought I had the ultimate routine. On weekdays I’d wake by 8:30am, prepare breakfast and coffee, then dive online before 9am. Immediately I’d open email, to make it feel like work had started, before browsing through my regular news sites (BBC, The Guardian) and through sports (MLB, fantasy baseball, Manchester United). Then I’d trawl through social media, feeling like I had a good handle on what was happening among my friends and the wider world. Throughout the course of the morning I’d attend to my work tasks – always from a list the night before – while, whenever distraction hit – frequent as a programmer – I’d return to social media feeds and fantasy baseball research.

By the evening – anywhere from 4-6pm – having satisfied most or all of my tasks I’d call it a day and progress to evening plans. If there were none, it was common for me to remain on the computer hacking away on personal projects or certain client work. There was an extended point of my life I’d regularly “work” 9am-midnight, although in retrospect the vast majority of that time was wasted online for nothing.

The moment we open portals to other people’s energies – e.g. news, sports, social media – our subconscious overheats and distraction is imminent. We’re plunged into the opinions and stresses of others, whether its hysterical, polarising opinion on current affairs, or the drudge of clueless sheep on social media, or the nonsense world of professional sports. None of these we have any control over – unless we don’t consume it to begin with. Furthermore, whatever platforms or sites we frequent, we’re bombarded with advertising, often targeted to further distract us from other duties and scientifically crafted to stoke our emotions.

Today’s Far-Improved Work-Travel Routine

Flash forward to the present and I’ve nurtured a far more productive and calming routine. My routine requires far less time in front of the computer or absorbing the stress, opinions or ads of others. I can spend more time in nature (I’m in the jungle a 10-minute walk from a beach) and definitely immersing myself way more in my passions.

Now my “work” days are shorter and more compact, unless you include morning writing or evening music, which I don’t. To me, writing and music are what I want to do in my life, so they rarely feel like a chore. Furthermore, this is a routine that I can easily continue anywhere I happen to be in the world – even during lockdown.

Everything starts the night before. The only habit I’ve carried over from my earlier freelance work career is writing a task list the night before. When I sleep I put my phone in Airplane Mode to eliminate wireless signals and notifications disrupting my brain or dreams. Factoring in sleep cycles I typically wake a little before 8am, and dive straight into an hour’s Vipassana meditation. Morning meditation is blissful, in a half-dream state, and whizzes by, while calming the mind for the day ahead.

With my brain refreshed I make breakfast – typically organic muesli with fresh fruit and coconut milk – and then plow into my morning’s writing tasks. Note that I remain completely offline through this, to avoid distractions.

After my writing duties are complete I connect online and begin catching up on messages and emails. Nowadays there are pleasantly not a lot of either. Checking my task list I jump into client work and other important tasks, and nail them as early as possible. When inevitable distraction hits, to take a break I reference music magazines for lessons that stoke my subconscious for later, or exercise. Over the course of the day I check whatever social media I feel like, without becoming stuck in timelines, walls or paranoid discussions.

It astounds me that on a regular basis, by 2 or 3pm, I’m usually done all my proper work for the day. I often turn my attention into music, watching tutorial videos to continue accumulating knowledge for later practice and experimentation. Most evenings I’ll spend hours working on music – composing, arranging, production. I finish writing my task list for the next day. If I’m bored and have time to spare I’ll sit another hour of Vipassana in the evening, and if not, I’ll do this before bed for a better sleep. It helps that I presently don’t have a girlfriend or much of a social life here in Goa!

Don’t Forget the Flexibility in a Freelance Life

I wanted to add this point about leaving ourselves open to partake in unexpected adventures and magical experiences. If we’re too rigid in our routine and intensely locked into our imaginary procedures we can miss out on some of the best times of our lives.

For me here in Goa last week was great example, even though it was an unusual week. On Tuesday night I sat on the beach late into the night talking with a new friend, and had to sleep in a little on Wednesday. Still, I got all my work done.

On Thursday morning I attended a weekly group Vipassana meditation session that unexpectedly extended from the scheduled hour. After mutually cooking and eating breakfast we sat for an additional hour – taking 5 hours all up. When I returned home I made sure I accomplished all my tasks for the day.

On Friday morning I was invited to try the travel activities of a local friend. I went kayaking then rode a fishing boat to a remote island where we picked coconuts from a tree. Afterward I enjoyed tea from a friend’s house. When I returned home I attended to all my tasks before a visit to another friend for a haircut.

The common theme here is that, irrespective of whatever activities I participated in, on all 3 occasions I got my work done. Sure, I have 2 decades of experience and practicing discipline to stay on top of things. I’ve learned that weeks like this can quickly turn unproductive if I fall behind early in the week.

Stay flexible but maintain the discipline to accomplish what needs to be done, and enjoy the full benefits of leading a flexible work-travel life.

Meditation to Clear Headspace

There are a few factors that contribute to my excellent headspace and productivity. Meditation is clearly a benefit. The smaller window of focused energy allows me to nail tasks in less time, without distractions or bad habits. This allows further more time for me to pursue my true passions and interests.

Of course, it’s not perfect, and I’m human. Distractions and urges usually do settle in, but even on an “unproductive” day I can push through to 5pm to diligently finish what really needs to be done. Discipline to complete work and fulfil the weekday routine is what keeps me on course and schedule.

Few commitments on weekends allows critical, freeing time for the self

Free Yourself on Weekends

Now, the weekends are completely different. I intentionally make few if any plans, particularly on Sunday. I sleep in on weekends, although my natural body clock still wakes me around 8am. On Saturday mornings I’ll attend to remaining writing tasks, such as penning this article! For the past couple of years it’s been about editing and polishing my epic travel-adventure-self-help book, Plan Sea.

Sundays are essential to rest and recharge with no stress or obligations. Then, if I feel the urge to do anything, I can do it because I want to – and with no pressure. It’s not out of outside pressure or “having to”. Sundays are often restful and creative for me, while pushing me to head outside into nature. On Sunday evenings I complete my Monday task list, although most of this is already jotted down from Friday.

Then the cycle continues. I probably maintain this routine for 48-50 weeks a year. The exceptions come around the end-of-year holidays and whatever week-long festivals or road trips I might have planned. I greatly enjoy turning off my phone and the Internet and taking a break from it all.

Do you have the discipline needs to efficiently work while traveling?

Are you truly productive? Make small tweaks today

What works for me won’t work for everybody else. Sure, maybe you enjoy your coffee-news-and-social media mornings, but ask yourself: Are you truly productive? Does this make you happy? Our lives are about constant experimentation, so if you feel in a malaise or something’s not sitting well, don’t hesitate to mix things up and try out new techniques. Keep trying until something sticks, and be ready to tweak and adapt as necessary.

Stay tuned to DigitalNomad.Blog for further insight and adventures.

Following up last time’s Introduction to Bitcoin and Cryptocurrencies, we proudly share our Nomadic Guide to Cryptocurrencies. This lists many of the major and rising blockchain-based projects, that are, or happen to have, inherent cryptocurrencies.

It’s a simple article of reference, with links and some historical relevance. As with everything in the crypto world, perform your own due diligence before buying any crypto. This is only one person’s perspective and suggestions.

Guide to Cryptocurrencies – Mainstays

When I began following crypto there was well under a thousand currencies – now there are nearly 6000. CoinMarketCap is a useful website for browsing through charts and history of all recorded crypto.

Bitcoin (BTC) – The granddaddy that kicked it all off, and to which every other crypto is compared. Sure, it’s useful to have a solid amount in your collection. It’s a strong cryptocurrency and nothing else. Bitcoin’s value is designed to regularly increase, through “halving” (where new supply of mining is cut in half), and its finite supply. But consider the ethical questions that lurk under Bitcoin’s surface: The vast amount of wasted energy to mine Bitcoin, and the increasing suspect global finance organisations loading up and manipulating its value. Trading Bitcoin is becoming like investing in fossil fuels. Consider trading BTC for ETH. More info on Bitcoin here…

Ethereum (ETH) – #2 to Bitcoin and, because of its practical applications, is projected by many to become MORE valuable than Bitcoin one day. Unlike Bitcoin – which is simply a cryptocurrency – Ethereum is a platform atop which other blockchain platforms and applications are built. More users are turning to these apps, that are (very) slowing replacing traditional web apps. Consider this – ETH is roughly 1/40 of BTC’s price right now, but could eventually exceed BTC’s value, possibly within a few years. We’ll share additional reasons to load up on Ethereum soon. More info on Ethereum here…

Ripple (XRP) – Ripple is one of the biggest and most established cryptocurrencies, notably from its early adoption as a platform for transferring funds between major banks. It’s not a real blockchain, and its ties to banks are both a positive and negative depending on your perspective about the banking industry. More about Ripple here…

DASH (DASH) – Despite rapidly dropping down the ranks, DASH Cash is one of the more established cryptocurrencies. It was originally a fork of Bitcoin that headed in new directions, such as being a convenient, fairly low cost international money transfer network. More about DASH here…

The Second Tier of Cryptocurrencies

This is a mere handful of hundreds of established and valuable coins.

Tether (USDT) – Highly suspect and controversial project, contrasted by being a highly valuable resource in the crypto world. Basically USDT “tethers” itself to the value of the US Dollar. This means there is a handy digital asset that you can monitor the USD against BTC, and trade in and out of. THIS IS NOT AN INVESTMENT COIN! Tether’s founders are in serious trouble for market manipulation and are heavily under investigation. They created a dodgy fake bank on a Wix site to help their cause. Beware. If Tether falls, Bitcoin could crash with it.

Bitcoin Cash, Coin, SV, etc – Offshoots and official forks of Bitcoin. Bitcoin Cash gained notoriety years ago when Cash split from Bitcoin, meaning any BTC you had magically created Cash out of thin air – for nothing. Yes, crypto is largely modern, digital economic scamming.

Binance Coin (BNB) – One of the major risers from one of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchanges. Binance is a useful platform to join – you can sign up here. Their BNB coin is useful to reduce overall fees.

Crypto.com Coin (CRO) – Similar to Binance BNB, CRO is the in-house digital asset for Crypto.com (formerly Monaco). They are an accredited crypto VISA card. Their coin is a high, consistent riser into the crypto stratosphere, and a useful, easy app. Note that they sometimes promise more than they can actually get away with (see: original credit cashback promises, MCO offering, etc). Sign up here for a good bonus – use code duq6omcaet

EOS (EOS) – A blockchain development platform with over $2B in market value, and a venture capital division. Learn more about EOS here.

Dogecoin (DOGE) – This was a joke project that copy/pasted Bitcoin’s code in the early days, and attained cult status. Meanwhile Dogecoin maintains a market cap of around $400m – demonstrating the absurdity of cryptocurrency. More info on Dogecoin here…

Litecoin (LTC) – Litecoin is another “open source P2P currency” that has been around since crypto’s first mainstream breakthrough. There is little else particularly innovative or exciting about it. More info on Litecoin here…

DogeCoin (like Doggy Coin) – a lucrative joke!

Guide to Cryptocurrencies – Intriguing Cryptos and Blockchain Projects

As a basic guideline, if a well-backed project is wholly useful to the future of a better humanity, it suggests enormous value. Being the latest, flashest coin has little to no staying power. When you research a project, evaluate its history, team, morals and projected timeline. Do experts consider the project legit? What are the potential pitfalls? Any project that can answer all of these questions with little hesitation, are worth tracking.

HOLO (HOT) – Holochain is my favourite long-running project. It’s a revolutionary post-blockchain platform superior to Ethereum in numerous ways. It’s leaner and faster because, instead of global consensus like other blockchains, it is P2P. It doesn’t even require the Internet to transact. It’s a great time to invest in Holo, while they remain in Alpha mode – the price will spike at the forthcoming Beta. Furthermore, their Holo.Host P2P hosting solution has the potential to disrupt Dropbox, Google Docs and iCloud – while paying everybody for contributing storage space. More info on Holochain here…

IOTA is a long-time project geared around distributed ledgers among Internet of Things devices. For instance, harnessing the computing power of smart fridges and washing machines. IOTA is based on Ethereum, that will greatly improve efficiency and coin value upon the forthcoming rollout of ETH 2.0. More information on IOTA here…

DeFi (Decentralised Finance) is a rising, lucrative crypto trend to follow. It’s about financial applications building upon blockchains. Many are built on Ethereum, which further supports loading up on ETH more than BTC.

Power Ledger is about decentralising power control and investing in while improving low-cost renewable power access. One can buy and sell excess power. More about Power Ledger here..

Monero (XMR) is a private digital currency. As proof-of-work, it involves wasteful mining, that might not be an efficient process moving forward. More on Monero here..

Cardano (ADA) is another proof-of-stake blockchain and consistent top 10 cryptocurrency. More info on Cardano here…

Some of these projects (and coins) will fall when more efficient methods (like Ethereum 2.0 and Holochain) further emerge. Part of the risk and opportunity of crypto is determining which projects have legs for the future. If it’s just another overhyped coin that is mined and serves no other purpose – beware.
